Filipino-Canadian Leaders for Leaders Foundation Youth Awards Update

Fifteen Filipino-Canadian Youth Nominated for Achievement Awards, Former Minister Dr. Rey Pagtakhan to chair Selection Committee

The Filipino-Canadian Leaders for Leaders Foundation (FCLLF) announced today that the nomination for the Youth Achievement Awards is now closed and fifteen (15) outstanding youths have been nominated for their achievement in arts and culture, academics, community service and leadership. The nominees are:

Juanita Bawagan
Gemma Villanueva
Patrick Cuenco
Ivan Dancel
Teri Agpoon
Nadine Snowling
Victoria Grace Ramos
Khrisa Dayola
Maria Rosales
Thegy Lona Lomocso
Christopher Sabarre
Alea De Castro

A distinguished panel of community leaders and role models will serve as the Selection Committee for the Youth Achievement Awards. The Chair of the Selection Committee is the Hon. Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, former Minister of Veterans Affairs and MP, Winnipeg North, and a prominent leader of the Filipino-Canadian community. Other members of the Selection Committee include:

*Adrian Harewood, host of Local news Late Night on CBC Television. Adrian is a familiar voice to CBC Radio One listeners in Ottawa as the host of the city's number one drive home show, All in a Day;

*Gary Lacey, Director General, Facilities and Security Directorate, Health Canada;

*Sharon McGarry, Vice President, Hulse, Playfair and McGarry and

*Anna Karina Tabunar, Communications Strategist and Consultant, former broadcast journalist and news anchor.

The Youth Achievement Awards nominees and award recipients will be recognized at an Awards Gala event to be held on February 6, 2010 at the Marconi Centre. The winner(s) in each category will receive $500 in cash and an Award plaque.

The Youth Achievement Awards was established by the FCLLF to celebrate excellence and promote the engagement and civic participation of Filipino-Canadian youth in Canadian society. The FCLLF founding directors are Regina Sosing Ferrar, Margarita Anzures-Berry, Amelita Armit and Nena Nera, with Betty Obas as founding volunteer member.
